Feline fortresses: The importance of hiding and perching for cats

Felines love to hide and perch, but did you know that these behaviours aren’t just whims of a cat’s personality? They are essential for their well-being and comfort.

Cats are instinctively drawn to hiding spots as a means of security. Whether it’s retreating from perceived threats or simply finding solace in a quiet corner, having a designated hiding space allows cats to feel safe and secure. A hiding spot provides them with a sense of control over their environment, reducing stress and anxiety levels.

Perching is another behaviour deeply ingrained in a cat’s nature. Cats love to survey their surroundings from an elevated vantage point, allowing them to observe and assess their environment. These high perches not only fulfill a cat’s innate desire for height, but also serve as a strategic lookout for potential predators. Perching also provides mental stimulation and exercise, keeping cats physically and mentally engaged.

When you visit an Ontario SPCA and Humane Society animal centre, you’ll notice that our cat rooms are set up with everything needed to keep the animals happy and healthy. Thanks to a Pet Valu Companions for Change sponsorship, all cats in the care of Ontario SPCA are provided with their own cat cabin, allowing the felines to have a safe space for their natural behaviours to flourish. These cabins even transform into temporary animal carriers and follow your adopted feline home. The cat cabins help ease your furry friend’s transition into their new home by providing them with a familiar scent and a place to perch while they adjust to their surroundings.

It’s important to create opportunities for hiding and perching in a cat’s environment for their overall well-being. Whether it’s providing cozy hiding spots like cat cabins or installing cat trees for perching, these elements enrich their environment and enhance their quality of life. By understanding and catering to these natural instincts, we can create environments that promote happiness and contentment for our feline companions.
